Overview
Senate Resolution No. 70 created the Task Force on Reading Curriculum and Instruction to conduct a study to gain data on the teaching of reading and the Reading Sufficiency Act (RSA).

Based upon its findings, the task force recommended that the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, in conjunction with higher education institutions, offer an annual reading conference for school teachers, administrators and higher education faculty that is focused on substantive reading professional development and curriculum alignment, effecting emergent and conventional reading.

Past conference literacy topics have included literacy development, technology, culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, tools and practices.

Jennifer SerravalloKeynote Speaker: Jennifer Serravallo, New York Times bestselling author of The Reading Strategies Book and The Writing Strategies Book

Jennifer Serravallo is a literacy consultant, speaker and the author of several popular titles, including the New York Times bestselling The Reading Strategies Book, The Writing Strategies Book, Understanding Texts and Readers, and The Teacher’s Guide to Reading Conferences. Complete Comprehension is a revised and reimagined whole-book assessment and teaching resource based on the award-winning Independent Reading Assessment. Her latest book, Connecting with Students Online: Strategies for Remote Teaching and Learning offers concise, doable answers for teaching in this unprecedented pandemic. Serravello was a senior staff developer at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project and taught in New York City public schools.

Jennifer SerravalloDr. Sheri Vasinda

Dr. Sheri Vasinda’s professional interests include reclaiming joy in education through inquiry, interest and new literacies. With over 25 years of K-12 experience that include elementary classroom teacher, campus reading/dyslexia interventionist and district literacy specialist, she now supports preservice and inservice teachers in developing deep understandings of literacy processes and practices at Oklahoma State University. She is passionate about supporting readers and writers who struggle through small, explicit teaching and purposeful pairings of new technology tools with strong traditional literacy strategies to amplify the effects of both.

Jennifer SerravalloMelissa Ahlgrim

For over 26 years, Melissa Ahlgrim has been involved in education, spending time as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, district curriculum coordinator and state director. A graduate of Oklahoma City Public Schools, Ahlgrim moved to North Kansas City after earning a degree in elementary education from Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. While teaching in North Kansas City, she was a fellow of the Greater Kansas City Writing Project and later worked with their professional development program. She was a Response to Intervention (RtI) coach and a Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) coach, was involved in a variety of districtwide curriculum projects in multiple content areas, and earned a master’s in instructional technology through MidAmerica Nazarene University.

Ahlgrim returned to Oklahoma in 2012 to work with Putnam City Schools as the district coordinator for elementary English language arts. During this time, she helped to establish the Response to Intervention process and procedures. She also worked with other educators across the state to write the 2016 Oklahoma Academic Standards for English language arts. Throughout these experiences, she has had a passion for reaching the needs all students.

Ahlgrim is currently beginning her fifth year as the director of reading sufficiency for the Oklahoma State Department of Education. In this position, she has worked to strengthen the understanding and use of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to address the reading needs of students in early grades, including those students with dyslexia. Outside of work, she is a founding board member of The Reading League Oklahoma and the mother of three girls.
